"Il déclare que son but est de « décrire l'homme, et plus particulièrement lui-même (...) et l'on trouve autant de différence de nous à nous-même que de nous à autrui ». Il estime que la variabilité et l'inconstance sont deux de ses caractéristiques premières. « Je n'ai vu, dit-il, un plus grand monstre ou miracle que moi-même ». Il décrit sa pauvre mémoire, sa capacité à arranger des conflits sans s'y impliquer émotionnellement, son dégoût pour les hommes poursuivant la célébrité et ses tentatives pour se détacher des choses du monde pour se préparer à la mort.
